ACA OC DR Nationals on the Dead
The Forks area in the Upper Kennebec River Valley of Maine is well known to whitewater kayakers, canoeists and rafters who enjoy paddling the class II-IV rapids of the Dead & Kennebec Rivers and nearby Penobscot.
This year the American Canoe Association will hold its Whitewater Open Canoe Downriver National Championship on the Lower Dead River on the weekend of July 1 to 3.
The championship events include Downriver and Sprint races for male and female OC1 and OC2 paddlers in seven age groups with separate divisions for Formula 16 (plastic) and Formula 14 (composite) canoe designs.
Youth paddlers from 10-15 years can compete in OC1 and OC2 on 4 mile class II course, in addition to the 10-16/25+ (youth/adult) full length Downriver and Sprint courses.
Kayaks and decked canoes will compete in six non-ACA championship events. The 12 mile Downriver races will begin each day at 12pm at the Spencer Stream public access/launching area and includes many challenging class II-III rapids like Spencer Rips, The Basin, Hayden’s Landing, Elephant Rock, Mile Long Rapid, and Upper and Lower Poplar Falls. The Downriver course will finish at the end of Lower Poplar Falls.
Immediately after each day’s Downriver classes have finished, Sprint races will be held for the same divisions on a 1.2 mile class III course starting at the river access above Upper Poplar Falls and finishing at the end of Lower Poplar Falls.
Fishing and hiking in the area is superb; and local businesses are set up well for all services. The Race Committee is offering advertising and sponsorship opportunities. Please contact Clayton Cole.
